Sunier Scholarship Guidelines
ELIGIBILITY
- Applicant must be a current participant in the First Christian Church in Iowa City, Iowa (or have parents who are participants in the congregation).
- Applicant must enroll for at least two semester hours of credit in English Language literature or poetry each semester as a full-time student in college or university. Required Rhetoric or freshman English composition courses 10:1, 10:2, 10:3, 10:4 will not be considered. On the back of this sheet is a list of courses that have qualified in the past as an example of the courses that the committee would consider acceptable.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
First Time Applicant
- Complete the application form. Please type or print in ink.
- Submit a photocopy of official description of literature or poetry course from University / College catalog.
- Submit verification of current enrollment (registration).
- Type an essay of approximately 1,000 well-chosen words. Topic: Describe the strengths and weakness of your favorite author or poet.
- Submit two (2) letters of recommendation from significant adults, such as hometown minister, teacher, or employer.
Repeat Applicant
- Complete the application form. Please type or print in ink.
- Submit a photocopy of official description of literature or poetry course from University / College catalog.
- Submit verification of current enrollment (registration).
- Type an essay of 500 to 1,000 well-chosen words. Topic: Evaluate previously funded literature / poetry course.
- Submit transcript showing grade of previous class.

Only completed applications submitted by the dates given will be considered.
SELECTION
- A scholarship committee appointed by the church board will review all applications and select the recipients.
- The committee will take the following factors into consideration during the selection process:
- educational goals;
- character of applicant;
- grade point average;
- letters of recommendation;
- involvement in the life of First Christian Church;
- performance on the essay;
- need.
The above are not listed in order of importance.
- A personal interview with the scholarship committee may be required.
AWARDS
- Individual scholarships will be awarded each academic semester.
- Scholarship recipients will be announced within a month after deadlines.
- Scholarships will be cash awards and may be used by recipients as they wish.
