Doubt

“Doubt is not the opposite of faith; it is one element of faith.” Paul Tillich –influential theologian of the 20th century

“The opposite of faith is not doubt: It is certainty. It is madness. You can tell you have created God in your own image when it turns out that he or she hates all the same people you do.” Anne Lamott- Traveling Mercies

Mark 9:30-32 -- Jesus Again Foretells His Death and Resurrection 30 They went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again.” 32 But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him.

The disciples were afraid to ask. Maybe they didn’t want to be embarrassed at their own lack of understanding, or maybe they feared that they might be required to give up their lives or their pet beliefs, but their motive was clearly fear. Full grown and complete love drives out fear, and fear rather than doubt is the opposite of faith. When Jesus calmed the sea he asked the disciples, “Why are you afraid- have you no faith?” It is good to ask questions and have respectful discussions; such things are possible when there is trust and love between us. Agreement is not necessary, but trusting one another enough to share our disagreements is the way of discipleship. We are all held in God’s embrace and that is more important than our differences.
